Senate Bill 2667

This morning 6/13/18 our team been tracking the Senate Agriculture Committee. The committee reviewed, discussed and agreed on the bipartisan Farm Bill which includes Senator McConnell’s Hemp Farming Act amendment.

We are relieved, this bill was passed on a 20-1 vote with the Hemp Farming Act included!

Senator Grassley (Iowa) attempted to pass his version of the amendment that would not support farmers or jobs. The amendment wasn’t voted on. Grateful that Senator Grassley didn’t have the support he needed to make the amendment part of the bill.

Grassley’s amendment would have excluded “cannabinoids,” “extracts” and “derivatives” from the definition of hemp. This could have meant that hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) could be treated by the DEA as a Schedule 1 controlled substance — just like heroin. Senator Grassley’s ultra-conservative additional language “research” on medical marijuana irritated our Senators and triggered challenging discussions. Senator Bennett argued “hemp products do not contain high amounts of THC and does not produce a high.”

Though we have passed this hurdle, we still have some challenges ahead. WE need your immediate assistance. Can you please, today:

* Write or call your Senator today
* Ask them to oppose Senator Grassley’s hemp amendment
* Let them know you support Senate Bill 2667 Senator McConnells Bill as it is written
* Make sure to Thank your lawmaker for his or her work.

This is a VERY CRITICAL time for the entire hemp industry.
